The Inspiration Behind this Painting
The outdoor community coined the phrase “Type 2 Fun” to describe that special kind of fun where challenge and discomfort (blisters, whipping wind, and steep inclines) make for the most fulfilling adventures in the long run. Unlike the pure, easy bliss of Type 1 fun (say, a day lounging at the beach), Type 2 thrill seekers feel a deep sense of invigoration and accomplishment in overcoming the elements and whatever harsh terrain nature throws their way.
I recently completed a 10-day campervan trip around Iceland. We hiked almost every day from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., crossing rivers, scaling the edges of cliffs, feeling the frigid wind cut through our layers, and ending each night with the beautiful ache of sore muscles and blistered feet. Our mantra the whole trip was: This is Type 2 Fun.
